Why did you choose to come to The Bulmershe School?

Bulmershe stood out to me from every other school because of its warm and welcoming atmosphere. When I attended an open evening back in 2019, I was struck by how enthusiastic every teacher was about their subject. The tour guides were very friendly and informative, and it felt as though everyone really enjoyed being there. The summer camp only confirmed that Bulmershe was the right choice for me. It was a wonderful opportunity to get familiar with the site and make some new friends, which was just what I needed to make the transition to secondary school as comfortable as it could be.

How has The Bulmershe School inspired you to strive for your aspirations and dreams?

I used to find the thought of leaving school terrifying, simply because I was unsure of what I was going to do afterwards. I knew vaguely that I wanted to do something theatre related, but when it actually came down to the details, I was drawing a blank. However, the school has been wonderful at showing me how to pinpoint exactly what I wanted to do, and then how to go about doing it. I’ve had several conversations with my drama teachers about finding a career in the world of theatre, and the sixth form team has been incredible at explaining the process of university applications. The amount of effort put into post-school destinations is staggering, and has been exactly what I needed to reduce my fear surrounding my dreams.

How do you feel the co-curricular (extra-curricular clubs, trips, opportunities) experience at The Bulmershe School has benefited you?

Despite fewer school trips than most year groups due to covid restrictions, I still feel I’ve had a huge range of co-curricular opportunities. For example, I’ve been to the West End several times with the school as part of the yearly musical theatre trips, which have always been inspiring due to my interest in the performing arts. Other trips, such as Bushcraft, French trips and ski trips are staples of the Bulmershe experience, and the memories made from these always leave an imprint in every participant. I have also attended choir, and there is nothing quite like belting out gut-punching harmonies with a group of like-minded people just as crazy as you.

What would you say is your favourite moment so far in your time at The Bulmershe School?

It’s so difficult to choose a single moment to be the best, as every year, I always look forward to the school productions. The students are involved in every aspect, and the talent and hard work from everyone is wonderful to watch. I love every opportunity I get to build the set, make props or help out during dress runs, as the pure energy and enthusiasm is exhilarating. I am always grateful to be involved in creating the show, and also be able to enjoy it from an audience perspective. Everyone who watches is amazed by the professional feel of the performance. They bring everyone together and are a key part of the Bulmershe community.

What is your favourite subject and why?

I don’t think I can choose between either of the performing arts. Right from year 7 all the way to year 13, I have always loved how practical music and drama lessons are at Bulmershe. The balance between performance and theory has been spot on, and the incredible range of performance opportunities has been fundamental to my development as both a musician and actress. Not only that, but the performing arts faculty are some of the warmest, dedicated teachers out there, and our classes feel like a close-knit community that couldn’t be found anywhere else.

What advice would you give to a student about to join The Bulmershe School?

Moving schools is scary, but make the most of it and enjoy it! Never be afraid of failing or asking for help. Grab every opportunity you can with both hands. Have fun!
